Gut Symptoms 101: What’s Normal and What Needs a Closer Look
Becoming your own health detective isn’t about having all the answers — it’s about learning to listen deeply to your body with curiosity instead of criticism. Too often, we ignore gut signals or brush them off as “just how my body is.” But your gut is constantly talking to you. It sends signals — some subtle, some loud — that can guide you towards better health if you know how to tune in.
When you start observing without judgement, you begin to notice patterns:
How your energy feels after certain meals
How your digestion changes when you’re stressed or overtired
Which foods leave you feeling light and vibrant, and which ones feel heavy or unsettling
This process isn’t about quick fixes. It’s about slowing down enough to ask, “What might my body be trying to tell me?” You don’t need to analyse or solve everything straight away. Just begin by noticing. Keep a journal. Take a quiet moment after meals. Breathe and check in with how you’re feeling — physically and emotionally. These small acts of attention build trust between you and your body — and that’s where real healing begins.
What’s Considered “Normal” for Your Gut?
There’s no such thing as a perfect gut that never makes a sound or feels anything. Some fluctuations are completely normal. For example:
Passing gas 10–20 times a day is perfectly healthy — your gut microbes are busy doing their job!
Feeling mild bloating after a high-fibre meal is common, especially if your gut bacteria aren’t used to that much fibre yet.
Having one to three bowel movements a day, or even every other day, can be normal if it’s consistent and easy to pass.
But there are times when symptoms suggest your gut might need more support:
Persistent bloating or pain that doesn’t seem tied to certain foods
Frequent diarrhoea, constipation, or sudden shifts in bowel habits without clear reason
Ongoing heartburn, reflux, or nausea that interferes with daily life
Unexplained fatigue, brain fog, or mood changes that seem linked to your digestion
These aren’t red flags to fear — they’re invitations to get curious. Your gut is saying, “Something’s not quite right here — let’s look a little deeper.”
You Probably Know More Than You Think
When people come to work with me, they often say, “I just don’t know what’s going on with my gut.” But as we start talking, I quickly notice something: they already know the answers — they’ve just never been guided to ask the right questions or connect the dots.
Sometimes, the body whispers long before it shouts. Maybe you’ve noticed you’re always bloated after a certain meal, or that stress sends you straight to the bathroom, but you’ve brushed it off as normal. These observations are gold. They are clues that help you understand your unique gut garden and what it needs to flourish.
Simple First Steps for a Happier, Healthier Gut
1. Start Your Day with Fibre and Water
Think of fibre as the fertiliser for your gut garden—it feeds the beneficial bacteria that keep your digestive system thriving. Pairing it with a big glass of water first thing in the morning helps keep things moving and supports healthy bowel function.
2. Add One Fermented Food to Your Plate Each Day
Fermented foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, or kefir are packed with friendly bacteria that can help balance your gut ecosystem. Even a spoonful a day can start to tip your microbiome in the right direction.
3. Make Time to Relax and Breathe
Stress can dry out your gut garden, making symptoms worse. A few minutes of slow breathing, a walk in nature, or a quiet moment before meals can help your gut relax and digest more efficiently.
